The Ottawa Doggie Club

We have started a facebook group to organize doggie play groups in Ottawa and surrounding areas. The group grew to about 70 member's in less then a week. So us and the members decided why not start trying to raise money for dog rescue organizations and charities. We are waiting for the nice weather to come so we can start our play dates :) Feel free to join our facebook group where we will be posting outings and charity and fundraising events on behalf of some of the rescues :)

Nina our Doggie of the week

Nina our Doggie of the week

Name : Nina
Age : 7-8 years old
Breed : Chocolate Lab

Good with dogs : no
Good with cats : yes
Good with kids : yes
Housetrained : definitely

Nina was returned to HH after having coming through our care 3 years ago. In both cases a loving family turned her in due to her aggression towards other dogs. Though much time and effort has been put into this issue, her new family needs to respect Nina’s fears and take care when around other dogs including not taking her to off leash parks.

Nina is a joy to have around. She walks well on leash. She won’t pull in an attempt to chase a squirrel or cat, and finds this recent snow fall really fun to roll in. She makes a great jogging partner for the novice runner. Caution must always be taken to avoid other dogs. Her adoptive family will be given techniqes to help with this, like using treats and distraction.

She is quiet in the house, and respectful of the resident cats. Since day two at her foster home she shares her bed with a cat each night. Belly rubs are like cat nip for this girl. Car rides are also great, particularly if she gets to meet new 2-legged friends.

Nina loves to tear around her backyard chasing her ball and keeping the yard free from squirrels. She passed her latest vet check with flying colours. Is fully vaccinated and spayed. She is a little over weight, but between diet and chasing her ball will be easy to solve. Will do well in a household that doesn’t feed her from the table.

If you are interested in this wonderful dog, please contact Hopeful Hearts at: adopting@hopefulhearts.ca

Our Doggie of the week This week is Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation Services(BHRR)’s Freddy. Freddy is an amazing, Gorgeous Dogo with no mean bone in his body.
Freddy really deserves to find his forever home with someone who will give him alot of love and affection.
He lived his whole life in hell. is tail had become broken somehow and never treated and now three inches has been removed. He never knew a loving hand, kind word or spoiling dog bed until his amazing rescue. THIS boy’s temperament is HEAVEN!

Ottawa St.Patty’s Day Parade with Boston Terrier Rescue Canada and Canadian Dachshund Rescue, Ontario

Ottawa St.Patty’s Day Parade with Boston Terrier Rescue Canada and Canadian Dachshund Rescue, Ontario

This weekend I was lucky to participate in my fist volunteer rescue event, which happened to be the St. Pattys Day Parade in Ottawa. I got to walk along side two very special Rescues which are  Boston Terrier Rescue Canada and Canadian Dachshund Rescue, Ontario. It turned out to be such a great experience for everyone and alot of fun.
The doggies were all dressed up in green and their little hats.
They were spreading the word.. Do not shop..Adopt…. What a great idea and great thing to spread around.
Not only were the rescue dogs strutting their stuff but the lovely volunteers were also handing out doggie treats to their K9 buddies watching the parade.  Hey they need treats too.. lol
As well as passing out cards.
I have attached a link for you to view some of our photo’s from the parade on The Ottawa Doggie Club’s FB page.

Also if you were at the parade and happened to snap some shots of our doggies please feel free to share them with us 🙂

We cannot wait until next year.

Dog Food Recalls

Dog Food Recalls

As a dog owner this really freaks me out that there can be so many recalls on dog food and products. It is very alarming that it is almost safer for you 4-legged family member to eat table scraps (not recommended)..
The link provided is for some recalls from 2009-2013. I say some cause I have seen more :s
I wanted to share this with you to help you keep your doggie safe and away from toxins.
It is always a good thing to know.

Why rescue a dog instead of buy from a pet store or online?

Why rescue a dog instead of buy from a pet store or online?

There are lots of reasons why you should rescue a dog instead of buying them from a pet store or doggy mill.

One of the biggest main reasons is that you’ll be saving a life.

Think about it.. Most of the dogs and /or puppies that you can buy online (kijiji/usedottawa) have come from a puppy mills Therefore over breeding, inbreeding and more homeless dogs that end up at shelters or rescues. Not to mention the well being of the poor dogs that are being over bred..  Most pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills so you would be supporting them.. Bad Idea?  I think so…

When adopting a foster or shelter dog you will be saving a life of a poor dog or puppy that didn’t ask to be brought into this world or be dealt the cards he/she was dealt.

You will end up with a forever companion that will love you endlessly and will appreciate the fact that you have provided him/her a forever home.

Not only are you saving a life you will have a new pet that will have been worked with by the rescue it came from, Spayed or Neutered and up to date with vaccines.  Can not get any better then that!

I hope that if you are looking to purchase a new dog you will first consider going to look at a rescue or shelter..
